Who We Support

Who We Support

At Maayu Mali, we do our best to support everyone who asks for help. However, not every service is the right fit for every person. Each application is assessed individually so we can understand your needs, your safety, the safety of other residents and whether Maayu Mali can provide the right level of support.

If we are unable to offer you a place in our program, we will do our best to connect you with other services that may better meet your needs.

Who can apply

To be eligible, you must:

  • be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • be 18 years or older
  • be from New South Wales or Queensland
  • be seeking support with alcohol and other drug use
  • be willing to participate in a 12-week residential program
  • have completed detox before admission
  • be medically stable and able to participate safely in a shared residential environment

How we assess your support needs

As part of your application, we may ask for medical, legal or other supporting information. This may include information about your physical health, mental health, medication, disability or support needs, current legal matters, bail, parole, court requirements or criminal history.

Legal matters

Maayu Mali can consider applications from people with current legal matters, bail, parole or court requirements. We will need to understand your conditions and whether they can be safely managed during the program.

Medication assisted treatment

Applicants on medication-assisted treatment may apply. Suitability will be considered individually, depending on stability, medication arrangements, safety, transport requirements and Maayu Mali’s ability to support the treatment plan during the program.

Disability and support needs

We can also consider applications from people with disability where their support needs can be safely managed in a shared residential environment. If your needs are beyond what Maayu Mali can safely support, we will help identify other services that may be more appropriate.

Mental health

Many people seeking support for alcohol and other drug use also experience mental health concerns. Having a mental health concern does not automatically mean you cannot apply.

As part of the assessment process, we may ask for information from you, your treating doctor or other support services. This helps us understand whether Maayu Mali can safely support your needs.

Maayu Mali is not a dual diagnosis rehabilitation centre, and we may not be the right service if you need a higher level of clinical mental health care than we can safely provide.

Circumstances we cannot safely accommodate

To protect the safety and wellbeing of all residents, there are some situations where Maayu Mali may not be able to accept an applicant. This includes applicants who have:

  • current pregnancy
  • serious or unmanaged mental health conditions requiring a higher level of clinical care
  • significant physical care needs that cannot be safely supported in a shared residential setting
  • significant intellectual disability support needs that cannot be safely supported by the program
  • offence histories that create an unacceptable safety risk in a mixed-gender residential environment
  • legal conditions that cannot be safely managed during the program

Some offence histories may mean Maayu Mali cannot safely accept an applicant into the program. This includes sexual or indecent assault offences, offences against children or minors, child abuse material offences, current or previous listing on a Register of Sex Offenders, murder or manslaughter.

Applicants subject to AVOs or ADVOs with strict no-contact conditions may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, particularly where the protected person resides in the Moree Plains Shire Council area.
