About Maayu Mali

Maayu Mali is an Aboriginal residential alcohol and other drug rehabilitation service in Moree, NSW. It is operated by Pius X Aboriginal Corporation and builds on a history of community-led support for healing in Moree.

Our Story

Maayu Mali is part of a proud history of Aboriginal residential rehabilitation services in Moree to support healing from alcohol and other drug use in a way that respects culture, family, community and identity. Services created by mob for mob.

The service has carried different names across its history, but its purpose has remained grounded in Aboriginal community-led care. In the early 1980s, Moree Aboriginal Sobriety House, also known as MASH, was part of a growing movement of Aboriginal-led responses to alcohol and other drug harm. The service later became known as Roy Thorne House, continuing the work of providing a residential place of support for people seeking change.

Today, Maayu Mali continues that legacy. Maayu Mali means “make better” in Gomeroi. The name captures the essence of what we do – provide a place where people can heal, reconnect and move forward with support. It recognises that recovery is not only an individual journey, but something connected to culture, community and Country.

As of July 2025, Maayu Mali entered a new chapter under the leadership and management of Pius X Aboriginal Corporation. This transition marks a return to local Aboriginal community control and strengthens the connection between Maayu Mali and the Moree community that helped build the service’s foundations.

Pius X Aboriginal Corporation

Pius X Aboriginal Corporation is an established and respected Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Moree. Its own story began in 1965, when St Pius X Mission was founded by the Roman Catholic Church and the Daughters of Charity to make preschool and medical services available to the Aboriginal community of Moree.

Over time, local Aboriginal community control became central to Pius X’s future, with an Aboriginal Management Committee elected in 1984 and the organisation later becoming Pius X Aboriginal Corporation.

Pius X’s operation of Maayu Mali is part of a broader legacy within Moree: Aboriginal people leading Aboriginal services, grounded in local knowledge, cultural strength and care for community. Maayu Mali honours those who came before us while carrying the service into its next chapter.

Maayu Mali is more than a rehabilitation service. It is a place of healing, learning, connection and hope.
